Treble Clef
G Clef - dictates notes on Middle C and higher.
Bass Clef
F Clef - dictates notes on Middle C and lower.
Time Signature
Music symbol that tells you how many counts per measure and what kind of note gets one count.
Staff
Five lines and four spaces on which music is written.
Bar Line
A line that divides a staff into measures.
Double Bar Line
Two lines that show the end of a piece of music.
Measure
The space between two bar lines on a staff.
Key Signature
Sharps or Flats placed at the beginning of a piece of music to tell you which notes are raised or lowered.
Meter Sign
Same as a time signature. Tells how many beats per measure and what kind of note receives one beat.
Grand Staff
Two staves placed one above the other. They are connected by a bar line and brace.
Whole note
Hold a note for four beats in 4/4 time.
Half note
Hold a note for two beats in 4/4 time.
Quarter note
Hold a note for 1 beat in 4/4 time.
Eighth note
Hold a note for 1/2 a beat in 4/4 time.
Dotted half note
Hold a note for 3 beats in 4/4 time.
Dotted quarter note
Hold a note for 1 1/2 beats in 4/4 time.
Whole rest
Silence for 4 beats in 4/4 time.
Half rest
Silence for 2 beats in 4/4 time.
Quarter rest
Silence for 1 beat in 4/4 time.
Eighth rest
Silence for 1/2 beat in 4/4 time.
