The Pawn
- Primary function is to take control of the center of the board and protect the king.
- It can only move forward one square at a time, but on it's first move it has the option of moving 2 squares.
- Cannot move backwards.
It can only capture by moving diagonally.
- If it makes it to the other side of the board it can be promoted to any of the other peices.
- Has a value of 1.
Zug Zwang
- When any move that you make will hurt your position. You are paralyzed but you are forced to make a move.
En Passant
- In passing
- If a pawn moves two squares forward passing an enemy pawn on it's 5th rank, the enemy pawn has the option of capturing that pawn.
Check
When your King is under attack but can still move out of the way.
Check Mate
When the King is put in check by one piece, and any of the spaces it would move to are defended by other pieces. This is the goal of the game.
Stale Mate
When the King is not in check but any space it would move would put it in check. This would bring the game to a draw.
