a transfer is from one clinical unit to another clinical unit within a hospital, UNLESS they were discharged.
what is an example of a patient transfer?
sally was admitted to medical unit on march 1. She needed emergency surgery, and went from there to the surgical unit. She got worse and was transferred to ICU, then back to the surgical unit. Sally would be listed as a TRF-out on medical, TRF-in at surgical, TRF-in and TRF-out of ICU, and TRF-in on surgical on surgical, where she is an inpatient for March 1 at CTT.

Daily Inpatient Census means the number of patients present at CTT, each day, PLUS any inpatients who were admitted and discharged (A&D) after CTT the previous day
what is an example of DIPC?
Mary admitted at 8:00 AM on March 2 and discharged at 10:00PM the same day. She will no longer be in the hospital census, but she did receive service on March 2, so the census total , march 2 is the census IP total plus A&D .

150 inpatient service days
what is per period?
It may be two days, two weeks, month, two months, etc., any multiple of a patient day

YES - they both mean the same thing
CTT + inpatients admitted and discharged
are census/inpatient census the same as Inpatient Service Day/Daily Inpatient census (IPSD/DIPC) ? Why?
NO< NO< NO !!! Census only counts at CTT, and does not include A&D the same day. IPDS is ALL patients counted and any that were A&D that day

the sum of all impatient services days for each of the days in the period under consideration.
how do you start a census?
it is the beginning census taken at CTT for the previous day. Then you add on patient day for EACH admission. Then, you subtract one patient day for each discharge. Add TRN-in, subtract TRN-out, then add A&Ds for the day
what is an example of a DIPC?
155 inpatients present at CTT on June 1. 15 patients admitted June 2. 5 transferred out of clinical unit, transferred to another clinical unit on June 2 before next CTT. Two patients were A&D the same day. SOLUTION: Write June 1 census 155; add admissions (15) subtract the discharges; add TRF-IN and subtract the TRF-outs (both should be equal and cancel out) then add the A&Ds (2) This is a total of 164 inpatients receiving service on June 2.
how do you record a death?

1. fetus not alive at delivery was never a patient
2. DOA dead on arrival, no signs of life if not a patient
