What three main roles do the kidneys perform?
1) Removal of urea from the blood
2) Adjustment of ion content in the blood
3) Adjustment of water content of the blood
Describe the removal of urea.
Proteins cannot be stored so any excess amino acids are converted into fats and carbohydrates.
This process takes place in the liver. Urea is produced as a waste product from the reactions.
Urea is poisonous. It is released into the bloodstream by the liver. The kidneys then filter it out of the blood. It is temporarily stored in the bladder in urine and excreted by the body.
Describe the adjustment of ion content.
If the ion or water content is wrong this could upset the balance between water and ions, meaning that too much or too little water is being drawn into the cells by osmosis. Having the wrong amount of water in the cells can damage them or mean that they don't work as well as they normally do.
Excess ions are removed by the kidneys. Some ions are lost in sweat. Balance is maintained by kidneys.
How is water taken into the body?
In food and drink
How is water lost from the body?
Urine, sweat, breath
The body has to constantly balance the water coming in with the water going out. What three things is the water balance between?
Liquids consumed, amount sweated out, amount excreted by the kidneys in urine
How does water loss differ dependent on temperature?
On a cold day, if you don't sweat you'll produce more urine which will be pale and dilute.
On a hot day, you sweat a lot and you'll produce less urine which will be dark-coloured and concentrated
What do sports drinks replace?
Lost water, sugar and ions
