Pathogens

Microorganisms which cause disease - 4 types

What are the four types of pathogens

Bacteria viruses fungi protists

Describe the growth of bacteria in a sealed container

They start growing and dividing rapidly. They reach a steady phase where number of new bacteria = death of old bacteria. Then it decreases because more bacteria die than are made. Because bacteria have used up the space and nutrients and produced toxins

Pathogens cause symptoms by

Damaging our cells by invading and reproducing and releasing toxins

The time period between infection and appearing of symptoms

Incubation period - the pathogen is increasing in number

Human defence systems

Physical (skin, mucus in airways), chemical defences and bacterial defences

How do white blood cells fight off disease

Lymphocytes which produce antibodies, phagocytes engulf and ingest and releasing anti toxins

Antigens

Protein molecules on the surface of all cells and pathogens. The ones on pathogens trigger an immune response

Vaccine

Dead or weak version of pathogen so that white blood cells can encounter the antigen and make the correct antibody
