Pathogens |
Microorganisms which cause disease - 4 types |
What are the four types of pathogens |
Bacteria viruses fungi protists |
Describe the growth of bacteria in a sealed container |
They start growing and dividing rapidly. They reach a steady phase where number of new bacteria = death of old bacteria. Then it decreases because more bacteria die than are made. Because bacteria have used up the space and nutrients and produced toxins |
Pathogens cause symptoms by |
Damaging our cells by invading and reproducing and releasing toxins |
The time period between infection and appearing of symptoms |
Incubation period - the pathogen is increasing in number |
Human defence systems |
Physical (skin, mucus in airways), chemical defences and bacterial defences |
How do white blood cells fight off disease |
Lymphocytes which produce antibodies, phagocytes engulf and ingest and releasing anti toxins |
Antigens |
Protein molecules on the surface of all cells and pathogens. The ones on pathogens trigger an immune response |
Vaccine |
Dead or weak version of pathogen so that white blood cells can encounter the antigen and make the correct antibody |
