Strengths
He emphasises human free will as the cause of evil. If we did not have free will, we would be robots.
The idea of evil as a privation makes sense. Blindness is a lack of sight, life is a lack of death, and other examples such as evil human beings is to do with them not reaching expectations.
It is impossible to defend God from evil without assuming his existence.
Science can explain how things happen, not why things happen. The real reason behind natural disasters science cannot explain
Weaknesses
Augustine takes Genesis literally, this includes belief in angels and demons, talking snakes, that the earth was created approximately 6,000 years ago. This would be completely in contradiction with modern science.
The privation definition of evil does not always work. E.g. murder, torture and earthquakes are not themselves privations of anything
Augustine already assumed God’s existence before he explains his theodicy (a defence of God in the face of evil). This will not be persuasive to a large number of people.
The explanation for natural evil, which is a result of the Fall, the loss of harmony in nature, and fallen angels/demons is unconvincing. It is not believable- science has given other explanations, located other causes for these happenings.
