belt

A dark band in a Jovian planet's atmosphere, encircling the planet. Gas here appears to be descending and warming.

Great Red Spot

A reddish colored region in Jupiter's atmosphere, larger than Earth. It appears to be a stable atmosphere vortex, having been seen since some of the earliest telescopic observations in the 1600s.

Roche limit

The distance from an astronomical body at which its gravitational force can pull apart another astronomical body.

resonance

A condition in which the repetitive motion of one body interacts with the repetitive motion of another so as to reinforce the motion. Sliding back and forth in a bathtub to make a big splash is an example.

shepherding satellites

Satellites that by their gravitational attractions prevent particles in a planet's rings from spreading out and dispersing. Saturn's F-ring is held together by shepherding satellites.

zone

A white band in a Jovian planet's atmosphere, encircling the planet. It appears that in these zones gas is rising and cooling, forming cloud particles.
