Raw Score

The first score obtained in testing; usually represents the number of items correct

Norm-Referenced Tests

Tests designed to compare an individual student's scores with national averages

Nominal Scale

Numerical scale that uses numbers for the purpose of identification

Ordinal Scale

Numerical scale in which numbers are used for ranking

Interval Scale

A scale that uses numbers for ranking in which numerical units are equidistant

Ratio Scale

Numerical scale with the quality of equidistant units and absolute zero

Derived Scores

Scores obtained by using a raw score an expectancy tables

Standard Scores

Derived scores that represent equal units; also known as linear scores

Descriptive Statistics

Statistics used to organize and describe data

Measures of central tendency

Statistical methods for observing how data cluster around the mean

Normal distribution

A symmetrical distribution with a single numerical representation for the mean, median and mode

Frequency distribution

Method of determining how many times each score occurs in a set of data

Mode

The most frequently occurring score in a set of scores

Binomial Distribution

A distribution that has two most frequently occuring scores

Multimodal distribution

A distribution with three or more modes

Frequency Polygon

A graphic representation of how often each score occurs in a set of data

Median

The middlemost score in a set of data

Mean

Arithmatic average of a set of data

Standard Deviation (SD)

A unit of measurement that represents the typical amount that a score can be expected to vary from the mean in a given set of data

Variability

Describes how scores vary

Measures of dispersion

Statistical methods for observing how data spread from the mean

Variance

Describes the total amount that a group of scores varies in a set of data

Range

The distance between the highest and lowest scores in a data set

Skewed

Describes a distribution that has either more positively distributed scores or more negatively distributed scores

Positively skewed

Describes a distribution in which more of the scores fall below the mean

Negatively skewed

Describes a distribution in which more of the scores fall above the mean

Percentile Ranks

Scores that express the percentage of students who scored as as well as or lower than given student's score

Z-Score

Derived scires that are expressed in standard deviation units

Stanines

A method of reporting scores that divide data into 9 groups, with scores reported as 1 through 9 with a mean of 5

Deciles

A method of reporting scores that divides data into 10 groups with each group representing 10% of the obtained scores
