Genetic diversity

The level of diversity in the genetics of the individuals of a population.

Selective breeding

The breeding of organisms by human selection of parents/gametes in order to perpetuate certain characteristics and/or to eliminate others.

The Founder Effect

When a few individuals from a population colonise a new region. These few individuals will carry with them only a small fraction of the alleles of the population as a whole.

Genetic bottlenecks

Populations of a species may, from time to time, suffer a dramatic drop in numbers. The few survivors will possess a much smaller variety of alleles than the original population.
