apple box: a plywood fabrication that comes in full, half, quarter, and pancake sizes used by grips for a variety of tasks

CamLok: trade name for a plug and twist connector used on larger electrical cables
carabiner: an oblong metal ring that snaps in place and used for rigging
condor: a trade name and the generic term that describes a telescoping manlift on a film set
craft service: the department responsible for cleaning up spills on set but more commonly provides refreshments for cast and crew
cyc [cyclorama]: a seamless, hard backdrop with a curved base used to create infinity behind a scene on stage
cyc-strip: a horizontal group of open-face quartz lamps used to light a cyc
dance floor: plywood layed by the grips and covered with masonite or ABS sheeting to provide a smooth surface for the camera dolly
desert dolly: a lamp or camera platform with a large pneumatic tires
diopter: a rotating part of the viewfinder on a camera used to compensate for non 20/20 eyesight
distro box: an electrical power distribution device used by set lighting
dolly: a mobile camera mount used by the grips
double: 1. a subject portraying an actor, animal, or vehicle 2. a wire scrim used to decrease the output of a light from a lamp by one full stop 3. a grip net for the same purpose [pictured] 4. a second item of wardrobe or props identical to one being photographed
dulling spray: a matte aerosol product used to reduce sheen on reflective surfaces
Duvateen: a black fabric that is napped on one side and used to manufacture several grip items including flags and solids
Edison: domestic plugs, receptacles, and lamp housings named after the American inventor, Thomas Alva Edison
expendables: items used on a film set that are generally not re-usable such as gel, tape [pictured], batteries, etc.
facade: the fake front of a set
filter: 1. glass or plastic placed in the matte box of a camera [pictured] 2. ND or color correction gel placed inside the camera 3. color correction, theatrical, or ND gel placed in front of a lamp 4. audio option used by the sound mixer
fly swatter: named for its look, a large (12x12, 20x20, etc.) frame holding a grip rag and mounted on the end of a crane
floppy: a grip flag having a matching flap that can be flopped down by releasing Velcro fasteners
4 by, 6 by, 12 by, etc.: a 4x4 foot, 6x6 foot, 12x12 foot, etc. square frame used for mounting large grip rags
French flag: a black, metal rectable with an articulating arm that attaches to the camera, especially the matte box to prevent lens flare
fresnel: a lamp lens that has ridged concentric circles named after Augustin J. Fresnel
furnie: furnie pad, furniture pad, packing blankeet, sound blanket
geared head: a camera mount controlled with hand wheels
gel: gelatin, as in soft filters
gennie: the power plant used by set lighting AKA generator
gray card: a middle gray reference, typically used together with a reflective light meter, as a way to produce consistent image exposure and/or color in film and photography
greens: 1. foliage used to decorate a set 2. the department that does this work 3. temporary catwalks hung in major studios named after the color they are painted AKA green beds
green screen: a post production technique used to matte in a background
Grifflon: trade name for a gridded, vinyl-like material, white on one side and black on the other; used by grips to bounce light or create negative fill
ground cheater: an Edison adapter that allows a three prong plug to use a two-hole electrical outlet
HMI: hydragyrum medium-arc iodide; a lamp usually high output and daylight balanced
honey wagon: trailer mounted dressing rooms, crew restrooms, and the production office on location
Kino: trade name for KinoFlo, the manufacturer of motion picture fluorescent lighting instruments
lunch box: a cube-shaped electrical distribution device, usually with 5x20A circuits
mag: film magazine
magic hour: typically twilight when the ambient light is gorgeous [AKA tragic hour]
mark: 1. tape, chalk, or any other object used to distinguish a particular place for an actor [pictured] , camera dolly, or lens focus 2. announced by 2nd AC before clapping slate
ND: neutral density
par: parabolic aluminized reflector; a lamp
practical: 1. a domestic lamp used on a set in the scene 2. set dressing or props that actually function on camera
process trailer: a very low-to-the-ground vehicle trailer with side boards (to accomodate a dolly, etc.) towed behind an insert car
putt putt: a small, gasoline powered electric generator
lavalier: (also known as a lav, lapel mic, clip mic or personal mic) is a small microphone used for television, theatre, and public speaking applications in order to allow for hands-free operation
safety chain: usually aluminum aircraft wire with clips on both ends used by the grips to prevent items from falling when rigged overhead
sandbag: a canvas bag filled with sand and placed on lamp or grip stands to prevent them from falling over
shot bag: a canvas bag filled with stainless steel shot and placed on lamp or grip stands to prevent them from falling over
scaffolding: a temporary, removable platform used when working at a height above the floor or ground
scrim: a metal mesh placed in front of a lamp to reduce light intensity AKA wire
set dressing: furniture, drapes, etc. used in a scene
sides: copies of a shooting day's script pages often reduced to pocket size (two script pages per page)
silk: a fabric used by grips to diffuse light also the generic name given to any white diffusion
single: 1. a shot involving one actor usually a close up 2. a half-stop scrim used by lighting techs 3. a half-stop net used by grips [pictured] (FYI: a single net can also be signified with a white edge, and as of fall 2015, all of SVAD's single nets are white)
slate: the clapper board used by camera to detail scene and take numbers and sync with sound
slider: a camera mount that allows small movements with a dolly move
flag/solid: Duvateen (black fabric) stretched across a metal frame used by grips to shape or block light; a black flag or rag used by the grips
speed rail: trade name for aluminum pipe used by grips for rigs
Steadicam: trade name for a mount that floats the camera, usually worn by the operator
sticks: camera tripod
stinger: extension cord
track: rails the dolly moves on; or a dolly move (~ shot)
ubangi: a camera head extender used on a dolly or tripod (named for an African tribe that uses lip discs to gauge and extend lips)
video village: where above the line folks congregate to watch, in video, what the camera captures
Visqueen: trade name given to thin plastic sheeting often used to protect equipment from rain / comes in clear and black
whip: 1. a flexible follow focus extension arm [pictured] 2. a fast lateral camera move (~ pan)
cookie/cucoloris: a device for casting shadows or silhouettes to produce patterned illumination

gimbal: a mechanism, typically consisting of rings pivoted at right angles, for keeping an instrument such as a compass or chronometer (or a CAMERA!) horizontal in a moving vessel or aircraft (or your HANDS when operating the camera!)
matte box: a device used on the end of a lens to block the sun or other light source in order to prevent glare and lens flare; and also to hold filters in place in front of the lens
follow focus: a geared device that attaches to the camera lens allowing for more efficient and precise control of changing focus
eyebrow: a tilting, flag-like addition to the front of a matte box used to block unwanted light and lens flare [pictured: eyebrow mounted on a matte box]
gaffer grip: specialized grip tool
drop ceiling scissor mount: specialized grip tool
pony clamp/A clamp: standard clamps for holding stuff
mafer clamp: specialized grip tool
cardellini clamp: specialized grip tool
BNC cable: video cable; (Bayonet Neill–Concelman connector is a miniature quick connect/disconnect radio frequency connector used for coaxial cable)
XLR cable: audio cable; (can supply electricity)
HDMI cable: audio/video cable; High-Definition Multimedia Interface is a proprietary audio/video interface for transferring uncompressed video data and compressed or uncompressed digital audio data
