Aorta

The major systemic artery. This is the artery from which all others arise.

Ascending aorta

This ascends from the left ventricle in the heart. The only branches off the ascending aorta are the left and right coronary arteries.

Aortic arch

After ascending and supplying the heart, the aorta arch posteriorly and to the left. There are three vessels that come off the aortic arch.

Brachiocephalic

One of three vessels coming off the aortic arch. Also called innominate artery.

Left common carotid

One of three vessels coming off the aortic arch.

Left subclavian

One of three vessels coming off the aortic arch.

Thoracic aorta

This is a continuation of the aortic artery as it descends through the chest cavity to the diaphragm. It's a very large vessel and divides into two major branches to the organs and muscles of the chest.

Pericardial

Arteries that enter the heart.

Bronchial

These arteries are for circulation to the lungs.

Esophageal

These arteries enter the esophagus as it passes through the mediastinum.

Cervical artery

There are several cervical arteries.


Ascending cervical artery.


Descending cervical artery.


Deep cervical artery.


Superficial cervical artery.


Transverse cervical artery.


These are in the cervical (neck) area.

Thyroid artery

There is an inferior thyroid as well as an inferoir thyroid artery of Cruveilhier.

Scapular artery

There is a descending scapular artery, dorsal scapular artery, circumflex scapular artery, and transverse scapular artery.

Thoracic artery

These include the highest thoracic arteries, internal thoracic arteries, and lateral thoracic arteries.

Pulmonary arteries

Both the right and left pulmonary arteries supply the right and left lungs.

Coronary arteries

There are both right and left coronary arteries. They supply the right atrium and right ventricle and the left atrium and left ventricle.

Intercostal arteries

Supply the muscles between the ribs and the structures of the chest wall. Intercostal means between the ribs.

Phrenic arteries

These supply blood to the diaphragm.

Musculophrenic arteries

Supplies blood to the muscles.

Pericardiophrenic arteries

Supplies blood to the area between the heart and diaphragm.

Abdominal aorta artery

This is also a large vessel. It is the segment of the aorta that is located between the diaphragm and the fourth lumbar vertebra.

Splenic artery

Artery into the spleen.

Left gastric

Artery into the stomach.

Hepatic

Artery into the liver.
