The degrees of distance between "real" things and the words and images we use when referring to them. If Rene magritte's painting of a pipe is just a representation of a pipe, why do we look at it as if it is a pipe?
Images do not always represent reality. We look at the image of a pipe as if it were a real pipe, but of course it isnt it is a representation of a pipe.
Not all cultures regard representation with the same reverence that we do in the west. Calligraphy is the chief form of art in Muslim culture.
Muslim culture- words can be trusted as images cannot. their belief stems from religion.
Muhammed said that those who take pictures will be punished on the day of judgement. faces and ppl in art frowned upon. Christians have shared this belief in the past, pondering whether or not depictions of Jesus and God were pious.
Differences and similarities of representational, abstract, and nonobjective art.
non representational- a work does not refer to the natural or objective world at all
Representational- work portrays natural objects in their natural state.
Abstract works can depict natural objects yet not in their natural state so in a way are non representational. In Toyo's 'Landscape' it is an abstract portrayal of a representational landscape.
What does the language of art enable us to do?
it enables us to describe what we feel when we view a work of art, both to ourselves and others
Relationship between Form and Content
In nonobjective works the content is its form. Malevich's 'Supremetist painting' is really about the relation between the triangle and square.
