What is "black figure technique"?
A technique of vase painting in which a colored slip (dilute clay) is applied to the body of the vase; details are scratched through the slip, revealing the vase's color. When fired, the slip figures are black and the body colore of the vase is red.
What is "canon of proportion"?
A system of constructing the human body with perfect proportions based on a mathematical uit, such as the height of the head.
What is "caryatid"?
A statue representing a human that supports the roof of a building.
What is a "cella"
The interior room of a Greek temple that houses the cult statue.
What is a "column"
The vertical support of a temple; composed of a long shaft, a capital at the top and sometimes a base.
What is a "conceptual figure"?
A way of drawing the human figure so that all of its parts are shown as clearly as possible. The head & feet are in profile, but the shoulders and eyes are shown frontally.
What is contrapposto?
A weight shift caused by having most of the body's weight on the straight back leg, while the other leg is slightly bent.
What is the "Corinthian order"?
The tallest and most graceful order, columns have capitals encircled with two rows af acanthus leaves.
What is the "Doric order"?
The eimplest order, with heavy proportions and cushionlike capitals.
What is an entablataure?
the horizontal beam atop a row of columns; it is divided into the frieze above and the architrave below.
What is an entasis?
The manner in which a column swells in the middle and tapers upward.
What is foreshortening?
A way of drawing a form so that it appears to extend foward in space. For example, a painting that shows a person reaching toward the viewer would use foreshortening.
What is a frieze?
Generally, a composition that takes the form of a flat band. Specifically in the classical orders, the middle band of the entablature; Boric friezes consist of triglypfs and metopes, and Ionic friezes often have a continuous band of relief sculpture bepicting a procession or similar activity.
What is the ground line?
A baseline upon which all figures stand.
What is "Hippodamian town planning"?
Town planning that sets all streets at right angles, even if the terrain is irregular; said to have been invented by Hippodamos of Miletos.
What is the Ionic order?
A Greek order with columns that are taller and more elegant in proportion than those of the Doric order; the capitals have volutes, (scrolls)
What is a kore?
Clothed, often painted statue of a young woman, usually representing an attendant to a god. She has a stiff pose and an Archaic smile.
What is a kouros?
Nude statue (slightly larger than lifesize) of a heroic young man with one foot forward, and straight knees and an Archaic smile.
What is modeling?
Shading from light to dark to create an illusion of three-dimensionality.
What is "order"?
In architecture, a system of proportion and ornamentation.
What is a pediment?
The triangular gable below the roof of a temple facade.
What is the post and lintel system?
An architectural system consisting of vertical posts supporting horizontal beams (lintels).
Define recession?
The illusion that objects or figures are set back in space relataive to the surface of a painting. Figures seem to stand on an imaginary ground plane (instead of a ground line); toward the back of a painting, figures are smaller and are placed higher inthe space.
What is the "red-figure techique"?
A technique of vase painting in which a colored slip is uesed for the background, leaving the figures as silouettes of unglazed clay. Details witin the figures are brushed on with the colored slip. When fired, thr figures are red and background is black.
What are triglyphs and metopes?
The typical divisions of a Doric Frieze; the triglyphs look like three vertical bars, and the metopes are square fields where sculpture can be placed.
Define "abstract"
A style based on natural appearances, but simplified.
What is "attribution"?
The process of identifying a work as having been produced by a particular artist.
What is "composition"?
The order or arrangement of formal elements in a work.
What is "criticism"?
The evaluation of works or art. Good criticism will explain the criteria for evaluation and carefully describe the work in relation to those criteria.
What are "formal elements"?
Visual qualities such as line, color or composition.
What is "genre"
Conerally, a type of painting or sculpture based on subject matter: specifically, genre painting is painting that depicts scenes of everytday life.
Define "expressive"?
A style that evokes an emotional response or that seems to disply the artist's own emotions.
Describe iconagrphy
The meaning of a work of art based on an understanding of symbols or or stories illustrated in the work.
What is 'idealism'?
A style that shows objects more perfect than they are naturally.
What is illusionism?
The techniques used to make images in a two-dimensional work of of art look like thre-dimensional objects; includes overlappig, modeling from light to dar, perspective, and other techniques.

Generally, the type of material a work is made from; specifically, the material in which pigmetnt is suspended in painting (e.g., oil, water, or egg yolk).
