1.THREE-PART QUESTION: What was the “Ballets Russes,” What did it have to do withRussia?, AND Why did we cover it in this Art Deco class?

The company was a famous Dance company that existed allaround Europe, but never went to Russia even though it was a Russian Ballet.Their costuming matched the early Art Deco aesthetic. They had brightly coloredcostumes with colors juxtaposed next to each other to create a psychedelicpalette. They would also hire a guest designer or artist to do outfit designs, like Picasso, which was when these artists were in their prime.

2.EXPLAIN the difference between ART NOUVEAU depictions of flowers and naturalforms and ART DECO depictions of flowers and natural forms.

Art Nouveau focused more on how the flowers and naturalforms really looked like in nature. They did not abstract them like they did inArt Deco. The Art Deco flowers and natural forms were depicted as moregeometric and less exact to how they looked in real life. They would also usemore bright colors, but still make it recognizable that it was a flower ornatural form.

3. EXPLAIN the change in the silhouette ofwomen from ART NOUVEAU to ART DECO in terms of: BUST, WAIST and HAIR.

Art Nouveau women would have their waist tightened bycorsets to make them look smaller and to emphasize their bust. The Art Nouveau hairwas worn long and sometimes piled on top of their heads. With Art Deco womenthey had more of a pencil type silhouette. Their waist’s were not sucked in andtheir busts were not heavily emphasized. Their busts were actually flattened sothat they would not stand out. Their hair was also cut short into bobs, whichwas considered rebellious. Josephine Baker was one of the most famous people tohave this hairstyle.

3.EXPLAIN the difference between the two types of ART DECO lamp/lighting styles.

The first style captured natural forms in the lamp’s designssuch as leaves and flowers or spiraling shapes. These pieces of lighting wouldusually be heavily decorated and detailed. They would also have a less polishedfinish to the metalwork. The second style was more modern and minimal. Theyused architectural elements similar to skyscrapers or more of a machineaesthetic in their designs. They also had more of a polished look to them andsometimes had stainless steel in the design.

Ebony, plastic, and horn
