Conduction
One way of transferring energy by vibrations being passed on from one particle to another. Occurs only in solid materials e.g. metals.
Convection
Ho thermal energy is transferred by the movement of particles. Can occur in liquids and gases e.g. convection currents in magma.
Infra-red radiation
A form of electromagnetic radiation that you can feel as heat. This is how heat travels from a hot drink through a cup to your hands, for example. All objects emit and absorb infra-red radiation, but some are better at this than others.
Evaporation
The opposite of condensation. When particles escape from the surface of a liquid to become a gas e.g. ground drying as the water evaporates off it after it rains.
Condensation
The opposite of evaporation. When particles in a gas lose energy and turn into a liquid e.g. steam condensing on a cold window.
