Stephen Lawrence

Stephen Lawrence was a black teenager who was murdered in 1993 by a gang of white youths.

The Samaritan, an enemy of the Jews, was the hero. Jesus taught that anyone who needs help, regardless of background should be treated kindly.

Mahatma Gandhi (Hinduism)


Gandhi was born in India. He experienced racial prejudice and discrimination under apartheid laws in South Africa. He campaigned peacefully for the rights of Indians living in South Africa and used peaceful methods to fight against the British who ruled India. He believed in equality and called untouchables children of God.

Martin Luther King (Christianity)
He wanted black people to be treated fairly and he fought against segregation without violence. He organised a "bus boycott", lead thousands of people in protest marches and gave speeches. He was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1964 and assassinated in 1968.
Desmond Tutu (Christianity)
He fought against apartheid in South Africa through anti-apartheid campaigns and non-violent protest. He won the Nobel peace prize in 1984 and became the first black Archbishop of Cape Town in 1986.

Makes it unlawful to discriminate against anyone because of their race, colour, nationality or ethnic origin.
