What compound makes up the cell wall of a fungal cell wall |
Chitin |
What organelle processes and synthesises lipids? |
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum |
What organelle folds and processes proteins? |
Rough endoplasmic reticulum |
What organelle processes and packages lipids and proteins and also makes lysosomes? |
Golgi apparatus |
What type of electron microscope can be used on thick specimens? |
Scanning electron microscope |
In which phase of mitosis does the nuclear envelope dissolve? |
Prophase |
How does cholesterol effect a cell surface membrane? |
Binds to hydrophobic tails causing them to be note closely packed together. Movement restricted causing the membrane to be less fluid and more rigid. Helps to maintain shape of animal cells that don't have cell walls |
Explain how co-transport takes place |
There is a too low conc of glucose in ileum. Na actively transported out of epithelial cell into blood. Lower conc in cell allowing it to diffuse down conc gradient bringing glucose with it via Na glucose co-transporter proteins Conc of glucose in cell increases causing it to diffuse into blood by facilitates diffusion down gradient |
Explain monoclonal antibody production |
B cells activated by Th cells Covered in antibodies When one is complementary to antigen on pathogen activates b cell Divides into plasma cells which secrete specific antibodies complementary to antigen |
Why is passive immunity short term?? |
Antibodies donated Seen as a foreign body so destroyed by body No memory cells produced |
