Rudolph Valentino

Palmer Raids

-A 1920 operation coordinated by Attorney General Mitchel Palmer in which federal marshals raided the homes of suspected radicals and the headquarters of radical organization in 32 cities


- Though more than 500 foreign citizens were deported, including a number of prominent leftist leaders, Palmer's efforts were largely frustrated by officials at the U.S. Department of Labor who had responsibility for deportations and who objected to Palmer's methods.

Sheppard-Towner Federal Maternity &Infancy Act

-provided federal funds to subsidize medical clinics, prenatal education programs, and visiting nurses


-improved health care for the poor and significantly lowered infant mortality rates; marked the first time that Congress designated federal funds to the states and encouraged them to administer a social welfare program



Associated State

-Refers to Hoover's belief that responsible cooperation between government, the American people(consumers/workers) and corporations will advance the economy any and the standard of living in America.

Dollar diplomacy

-Term used to describe the efforts of the US to further its foreign policy through use of economic power by gaurenteeing loans to foreign countries


-This policy would improve the relationship between the US and foreign countries as well as US trade. Philander Knox was a supporter of this. Taft used this policy (successfully and unsuccessfully) in China, East Asia, and the Dominican Republican (among others).

Scopes Trial

-1925- a highly publicized trial where John Thomas Scopes violated a Tennessee state law by teaching evolution in high school. Scopes was prosecuted by William Jennings Bryan and defended by Clarence Darrow; Scopes was convicted but the verdict was later.


-Displayed the fundamentalism prevalent in rural areas at the time

National Origins Act

-A government legislation that cut down the percent of the Emergency Quota Act from 3% to 2%, and it changed the census used from the 1910 one to that of the 1890 one.


-It greatly limited the number of immigrants who could move to the U.S. And it reflected the isolationist and anti-foreign feeling in America as well as the departure from traditional American ideals

Marcus Garvey

-leader of the UNIA, urged blacks to return to Africa because, he reasoned, blacks would never be treated justly in countries ruled by whites

The Self Help movement

-taught black students useful trades so that they could gain self-respect and economic security. Washington's self-help


-approach to solving the nation's racial problems was labeled "accommodationist" because it stopped short of directly challenging white supremacy
