3 function of skeletal system

Protect

Support

Shape

Axial skeleton

-skull

-vertebrae

-sternum

- ribs

-hyoid bone

Appendicular skeleton

-Pectoral girdle (clavicle, scapula)

- Upper limbs (upper arm, forearm, wrist, hand, fingers)

-pelvic girdle (coxal bones)

-lower limbs (upper leg, lower leg, ankle, foot, toes)

Function of periosteum

-covers external surface of bone except joints.

-

outer "fibrous layer" is dense irregular connective tissue.

-inner "osteogenic layer" consists of stem cells that make all bone cells except bone destroying ones.

-provides anchoring points for tendons and ligaments

Function of diaphysis

-forms long axis of the bone

-made of relatively thick "collar" of compact bone that surrounds a central medullary cavity.

Medullary cavity

In adults, medullary cavity contains fat (yellow marrow) and is called yellow marrow cavity

Epiphysis: proximal, distal, what is the purpose of the epiphyseal plate/line?

The epiphyseal plate is present in children, a disk of hyaline cartilage that grows through childhood to lengthen bone. By adulthood it's the epiphyseal line.

What is spongy bone and it's function?

A honeycomb of small needle like or flat pieces called trabeculae which are filled with red or yellow bone marrow.

Compact bone

The bones dense outer layer that looks smooth and solid.

Endosteum function

- It's a delicate connective tissue membrane

-covers internal bone surfaces

- covers trabeculae of spongy bone

-contains osteogenic cellar that can make bone.

Osteon function

Tiny weight bearing pillars

Lamellae function

The matrix tube that contains the collagen fibers.

Osteocyte function
