Geocentrism
Developed by Aristotle. Above the Earth lay a series of concentric spheres with earth at the center. Past the last ring was the heavens. Earth was at the center because it was so heavy. system of 3 main planetary movements...epicycles and deferents and then orbits. The Ptolomaic system was based on Geocentrism. Copernicus challenged it in his book OtRotHS. Fit with the Bible.
Heliocentrism
Theory developed by Copernicus and defended in the book On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres. Controversy w/ Church
Mechanism
The idea that drove the philosophers of the SciRev. That the world could be known and predicted. That nature is machinery that can be figured out. Mathematics became the new language. Emphasis on natural knowldege. Went against the church: If everything could be explained mathematically, divine purpose didn't exist anymore.

Showing the existence of God through studying nature. theory by francis bacon: that by studying nature, you can get true divinity
Encyclopedia
Created by Denis Diderot. Seven volumes of text and eleven volumes of pictures. Collective effort of over 100 authors. Was basically an encyclopedia of all the theories and stuff of the time.

People who supported change and reform. wanted to apply the rules of reason to institutions. Freedom. Advocates of the enlightenment. Used printed methods of communication
