Federal System

A system of government in which power is divided between a central authority and constituent political units.

Unitary System

System in which power is centralized in capital and component areas have little or no autonomy.

Democratization

Process by which democracy expands, within a state or across the world.

Those few people with great influence.

GDP divided by population, giving an approximate level of well-being.

GDP

Gross Domestic Product-combined value of all goods and services produced, bought and sold in a nation in a year.

Corruption Perception Index

The Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries and territories based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be. A country or territory's score indicates the perceived level of public sector corruption on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).

Suffrage

The right to vote, especially in a political election.

Libertarian

One who advocates maximizing individual rights and minimizing the role of the state.

Regime

A mode or system of rule or government. The period during which a particular government or ruling system is in power.

Members of a liberal or radical political party, or those favoring extensive political reform.

Favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs. Favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, especially as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.

Authoritarian

Nondemocratic or dictatorial politics.

Anarchism

Radical ideology seeking to over-throw all conventional forms of government.

Theocracy

Rule by priests.

Republic

Country not headed by monarch. Also civil division of Communist federal systems and now of Russia.

Region where state originated.

Patriae

Latin for love of one's country; patriotism.

Constitution

Written organization of a country's institutions.

Common Law

System of judge-made law developed in England.

A sovereign state inhabited by a relatively homogeneous group of people who share a feeling of common nationality.
