Define the sympathetic division |
The sympathetic division (called the thoracolumbar division) of the ANS because the sympathetic preganglionic neurons are associated with the thoracic and lumbar regions of the spinal cord. Specifically, the cell bodies of sympathetic preganglionic neurons are in the lateral horns of the spinal cord gray matter between T1 and L2. The axons of the preganglionic neurons exit through the spinal nerves for a short distance before they exit the nerves and project to sympathetic ganglia. There are 2 types of sympathetic ganglia: sympathetic chain ganglia and collateral ganglia. |
|
Define the parasympathetic division |
The parasympathetic division (called the craniosacral division) because the cell bodies of parasympathetic preganglionic neurons are located either within cranial nerve nuclei in the brainstem or within the lateral parts of the gray matter in the sacral region of the spinal cord from S2 to S4. Axons of the parasympathetic preganglionic neurons from the brain are in cranial nerves 3, 7, 9, and 10. The axons associated with the sacral region are in pelvic splanchnic nerves. The preganglionic axons course through these nerves to terminal ganglia, where they synapse with postganglionic neurons. |
|
Which division (parasympathetic or sympathetic) release ACh and which release NE? |
Parasympathetic: ACh only Sympathetic: both, ACh in the sympathetic preganglionic neuron and NE in the sympathetic postganglionic neuron. |
|
What is the length of neurons in the parasympathetic vs sympathetic pre and postganglionic? |
Parasympathetic: Long preganglionic neurons Short postganglionic neurons Sympathetic: Short preganglionic neurons Long postganglionic neurons |
|
What's the location for the cell bodies in the parasympathetic vs sympathetic divisions? |
Parasympathetic: brainstem and lateral horns of the sacral region of the spinal cord gray matter (S2-S4) Sympathetic: lateral horns of thoracic and lumbar regions of the spinal cord gray matter (T1-L2) |
