Nitrogen Fixation

Process by which bacteria take nitrogen from the air and fix it in to a form that plants can use.

Pollen

The case that encloses the sperm. Only found in Cone plants and flowering plants.

Transpiration

The loss of water from plants through the stomata.

Adaptation

Any characteristic that allows a plant to survive in their environment.

Pollination

The process of transferring pollen from one plant to another.

Cuticle

A waxy, transparent layer covering the epidermis of certain leaves.

Guard Cell

One of the two epidermal cells that surround the stomata and allow it to open and close.

Vascular Tissue

General term for the cells that transport water, dissolved foods and other substances in plants.

Root Hair

A projection of an epidermal root cell that increases surface for water absorption.

Seed

After the sperm and egg fuse in some plants this structure is formed. It can be planted and a new plant will grow.

An enlarged tip of a rhizome swollen with stored food. (ex. potato)
