cell division

Process by which a cell divides into two new identical daughter cells.

chromatid

One of two identical “sister” parts of a duplicated chromosome

centromere

Area where the sister chromatids are attach.

interphase

Period of the cell cycle between cell divisions. (G1, S & G2 all together.)

cell cycle

Series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide.

mitosis

The phases of eukaryotic cell division during which the cell nucleus divides.

prophase

First and longest phase of mitosis.

centriole

One of two tiny structures located in the cytoplasm of animal cells near the nuclear envelope. They help to organize the spindle fibers.

spindle

Fanlike microtubule structure that helps to separate the chromosomes during mitosis.

metaphase

When the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell. Second phase of mitosis.

anaphase

Phase of mitosis when the sister chromatid are pulled apart. The third phase.

telophase

When the nuclear membrane reforms around the two identical nuclei. Fourth and final phase of mitosis.

cytokinesis

Division of the cytoplasm during cell division.

cyclin

One of a family of closely related proteins that regulate the cell cycle in eukaryotic cells.

cancer

Disorder in which some of the body’s own cells lose the ability to control growth.

Diploid

A cell that has two copies of each chromosome.

Haploid

A cell that has only one copy of each chromosome.

Somatic Cell

Another name for regular body cells.

Gametes

Another name for sex cells like the sperm and the egg.

Meiosis

The process in which a cell divides twice to produce 4 genetically different, haploid sex cells.
