Describe the geographic setting of China's first civilization
The first civilization was along the Huang River in the North China Plain.
Why did the early Chinese have so little contact with other ancient civilizations?
The deserts, mountains and seas were barriers that prevented contact with the other civilizations.
Think about the other ancient civilizations you have read about. How were the earliest civilizations similar? How were they different?
All had some form of barriers that limited contact with others. The others did not think of themselves as the center of the world.
According to Confucius how should rulers and other people in authority behave?
They should set good examples and be respectful and just (fair).
Why did Confucius think his ideas were necessary and important?
He believed that if authority figures set a good example, the people would follow the example and a peaceful society would result.
Some people thought the ideas of Confucius were dangerous. Who felt most threatened by his ideas? Explain why? How do we know that others found his ideas useful?
Some of the wealthy and important people felt threatened. They would have to treat others fairly, face competition for government jobs, and possibly lose some of their power. The Han dynasty thought his ideas were useful and incorporated them into the civil service system.
Identify three actions the emperor Shi Huangdi took to unite China?
He built the Great Wall for defense, built new roads, standard weights and measurements, common currency, improved the system of writing, and a law code.
Why is the rule of Shi Huangdi judged as harsh?
He killed or imprisoned his opponents, attempted to control people's thoughts and beliefs by burning books and killing scholars.
How did the harsh rule of Shi Huangdi bring about Liu Bang's rise to power?
Because of Shi Huangdi's harshness, Liu Bang became a leader of a rebellion and eventually became the emperor of the new dynasty.
What characterized the rule of the Han dynasty?
A stable government, a Confucian civil service system, growth of the empire, contact with the west via the Silk Road, advances in the arts and technology.
Why is the Han dynasty considered to be an important part of Chinese history?
It was a time of many achievements - see list of inventions handout.
Why do the people of China today call themselves "the children of Han"?
They are very proud of the Han dynasty (legacy) and hope to continue the Han tradition of achievements.
What was the route of the Silk Road?
It began in Chang'an, China, went west along the Great Wall, through the deserts and over mountains, through Mesopotamia and Persia to Antioch, Turkey. Then by boat to ports along the Mediterranean Sea.
How was the Silk Road used?
Goods and ideas passed from trader to trader along the road.
What was the importance of the Silk Road to other civilizations?
It was the route by which they learned of the Chinese achievements and came into contact with the Chinese civilization.
How did the physical geography of China affect the growth of ancient Chinese civilizations?
Mountains and seas separated ancient China from other regions, and rivers such as the Huang deposited fertile soil suitable for farming.
How did the ancient Chinese people develop a government?
A merit system based on the teachings of Confucius was instituted in which candidates for government jobs had to pass official examinations.
What historical accomplishments was Shi Huangdi known for?
Emperor Shi Huangdi united China's warring kingdoms, implemented a common weights and measurements, a common currency, an improved writing system and a law code.
What historical accomplishments was the Han Dynasty known for?
During the Han Dynasty, advancements were made in the arts, medicine, and technology.
