Blood Composition
Plasma, Solutes, Formed Elements, Leukocytes, Thrombocytes
% of Plasma in blood
55 %
Characteristics of Plasma
sticky straw colored liquid, 90 percent water, fluid portion of blood, medium for blood. Absorbs heat.
Solutes of blood
Albumin: 60% made in liver, helps maintain water balance.
Globulins: transport proteins, also initial phase of immune bodies.
Clotting proteins: fibrinogen and prothrombin.
Digestive nutrients, electrolytes, repiratory gases, non proeins.
What are erythrocytes:
RBC's no nucleus , no mitosis, live 120 days. Arise from hematopoeitic stem cells. Big oxygen payload.
Die in spleen and is broken down into heme and globin. Fe is recycled.
Heme is broken down into bilirubin.
What are leukocytes:
WBC's: nuclei, fight infection, disease. Less than 1% of blood.
5 types of Leukocytes:
Neutrophils: most numerous, bacteria/fungi
Lymphocytes: 20-30%, specific invaders.
Monocytes: 2-8% high # late in infection.
Eosinophils: 1-4% digestive enzymes.
Basophils: rare, help allergies and inflammation.
What are thrombocytes
Platelets, produce protein fibers to clot blood. (fibrinogen and prothrombrin.)
4 blood types:
A, B, AB, O
Who does type A receive blood from and to whom does it give to.
Receive: A,O Give to : A, AB
Who does B receive from and to whom does it give to
Receive: B,O Give to: B,AB
Who does AB receive from and to whom does it give to
Receive: A,B,AB,O. Give to: AB
Who does type O receive from and to whom does it give to.
Receive: O Give to: A,B,AB,O
