The net movement of particles of a particular substance from regions of its higher concentraion to its lower concentration (provided that all regions are at the same temperature and pressure).
Diffusion
Diffusion of H2O molecules thru a permeable membrane
Osmosis
What 2 conditions must be necessary for diffusion to be classified as osmosis.
1. Diffusion of H2O
2. Thru a selectively permeable membrane |
LOWER solute concentration, therefore, a HIGHER water concentration as the comparable solution.
Hypotonic Solution (less solution)
Is their a net movement of water into or away from HYPOTONIC solutions?
INTO the cell
BURSTING of a cell due to the INCREASE of H2O pressure
Cytolysis
If NOTHING can move thru membrane then its an _____________ membrane
IMPERMEABLE
If SOME an move thru the membrane it is a _________________ membrane.
SELECTIVELY PERMEABLE
True or False?
Are all diffusion processes Osmosis? |
NO
The lower the solute concentration, the ___________ the H2O conentration.
HIGHER
Diffusion will progress to __________ ___________ and then it stops.
Dynamic Equilibrium
SHRINKING of a cell due to the LOSS of H2O pressure
crenation/plasmolysis
Is there a net movement of water into or away from HYPERTONIC solutions?
AWAY from (out of the cell)
MORE concentration than water
HYPERtonic
LESS concentration than water
HYPOtonic
That point in which ALL NET MOVEMENT of a particular stops.
Dynamic Equilibrium
SAME solute concentration, therefore, the same H2O concentration as the comparable solution.
Isotonic (same solution)
Is their a net movement of water into or away from isotonic solutions?
NEITHER, its in Dynamic Equilibrium
What is this process called:
Many essentials nutrients like amino acids and glucose are insoluble in lipids and too large to pass through the channel pores. These substances can be transported across the plasma membrane by facilitated diffusion. The molecule to be transported binds to a protein - the shape of the protein then changes moving the molecule inside the cell. Like simple diffusion molecules move from high to low concentrations, so no energy is required. |
Facilitated diffusion
How does Facilitated Diffusion differ from simple diffusion?
Once the carrier protein is saturated the rate of diffusion cannot increase even if the concentration gradient increases.
HIGHER solute concentration, therefore, LOWER H2O concentration as the comparable solution.
Hypertonic Solution (more solution)
The movement of substances through the plasma membrane with NO ENERGY.
Passive transport
The CELL EXPENDS ENERGY to move substances across the cell membrane.
Active transport
Give 3 examples of passive transport.
Examples - diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and osmosis.
Substances move across the plasma membrane by COMBINING WITH CARRIER molecules located in the plasma membrane. These molecules are proteins called permeases.
Carrier molecule
The introduction of fluids in to the cytoplasm by enclosing them in membranous vesicles at the cell surface.
Pinocytosis{ cell drinking}
The process by which substances are MOVED OUT of a cell by cytoplasmic vesicles that merge with the plasma membrane.
Exocytosis
The ENGULFING of solid material such as pathogens into the cytoplasm by enclosure in a vesicle.
Phagocytosis{ cell eating}
