Phalanges

3 per finger- Distal, Middle and Proximal
2 for thum- proximal and distal
Structure: Base Shaft Head

3 per finger- Distal, Middle and Proximal

2 for thum- proximal and distal

Structure: Base Shaft Head

Palmar Aponeurosis

Thickened Deep fascia

Insertion of palmaris longus

Anchored into flexor retinaculum proximally and fibrous sheaths of digits distally

Present even if palmaris longus is missing

Of little function in humans

Flexor Retinaculum

Holds flexor muscle tendons in place

Also has little function in humans

Palmaris Brevis

Small thin superficial muscle

Connects skin to the palmar aponeurosis

Covers the ulnar nerve and artery

Extensor Retinaculum

Prevents bowstringing of tendons when hand is extended at the wrist joint

Fibrous Digital and Synovial Sheaths

Allows tendons to slide over each other during finger movement. 2 parts:

Synovial sheath-helps tendons slide

Fibrous digital sheath- holds tendons in place

Anular and Cruciform Ligaments

Cruciform ligaments (4 per digit) weak Anular ligaments (5 per digit) are strong
Prevents tendons of FDS and FDP from bowstringing when digit is flexed.

Prevents tendons of FDS and FDP from bowstringing when digit is flexed.

Vinculum (vincula) Breve & Longa

Bands that connect tendons of FDS and FDP to phalanges. Small blood vessels traverse through to supply to long tend. helps hold flex. tendons on digits

Thenar Fascial Compartment of Hand

Abductor pollicis brevis

Flexor Pollicic brevis

Opponens pollicis

*Innervated by Median Nerve

Adductor Fascial Compartment of Hand

Adductor Pollicis

*Innervated by Ulnar Nerve

Hypothenar Fascial Compartment of the Hand

Abductor digiti minimi

Flexor Digiti Minimi

Opponens digiti mini

*Innervated by Ulnar Nerve

Central Fascial Compartment of the Hand

Flexor tendons & sheaths

Lumbricals

Arteries and nerves

*Innervated by Ulnar and Median Nerves

4 Lumbricals

All lumbricals insert laterally into exten. expansions
Medial 2 lumbricals origin frm 2tendons of FDPLateral 2 lumbricals originate from 1 tendon of FDP

4 Dorsal Interossei Muscles

Dorsal interosseous muscles ABduct (DAB)
Thumb and little finger have no dorsal interossei muscles because they already have their own abductors

3 Palmar Interossei

Palmar inter musc. ADduct (PAD)
Middle digit has none cause it is the "center line" of adduction. Thumb has none cause it has adductor pollicis

Median N of hand

Enter through carpal tunnel innervates:

-the thenar muscles (recurrent br.)

-lumbricals 1-2

-Skin of lateral palm and 3 1/2digits

Ulnar N of hand

Runs superficial to flexor retinaculum, then becomes:

Deep branch- dives deeply to innervate remaining hand muscles

Superficial br. innervates skin of medial hand (1 1/2 digits)

Radial N of hand

Innervates no muscles in hand, but its superficial branch supplies skin of lateral dorsum and proximal 3 1/2 digits

Cutaneous Innervations of the Hand

Median N-lateral pal and 3 1/2 digits
ulnar N- medial hand, 1 1/2 digits
Radial N- lateral dorsum and proximal 3 1/2 digits

Median N-lateral pal and 3 1/2 digits

ulnar N- medial hand, 1 1/2 digits

Radial N- lateral dorsum and proximal 3 1/2 digits

Claw Hand

Ulnar N lesion @ wrist

Paralysis of lumbricals & interosseous muscles to digits 4 & 5 and loss of intrinsic muscle elasticity

Hyperextension of MP & partly flexed IP joints
