- Longer than wide
- Shaft with heads at ends - Composed of compact bone |
Spongy Bone
- Also called cancellous bone
- Composed of trabeculae and lots of open space |
Compact Bone
- Looks smooth and homogenous
- Dense |
Structure of A Long Bone
1. Diaphysis (shaft)
2. Epiphysis ( end of long bone, composed of a thin layer of compact bone that encloses spongy bone) 3. Articular Cartilage ( Covers the epiphyseal surface in place of the periosteum) 4. Epiphyseal Plate ( a thin area of hyaline cartilage that provides for lengthwise growth of the bone during youth. Once bone stops growing this turns into a line of bone in adults) 5. Medullary Cavity ( A storage region for adipose tissue) 6. Endosteum ( Lines the shaft, covers the trabeculae of spongy bone and lines the canals of compace bone.) |
Frontal Bone
- Anterior portion of cranium
- forms: forehead, superior orbit, and floor of anterior cranial fossa. |
Supraorbital foramen
- Opening above each orbit
- Allows blood vessels and nerves to pass. |
Glabella
- Smooth area between the eyes
Parietal Bone
- Posterolateral to the frontal bone, forming sides of cranium
Sagittal Suture
- Midline articulation point of the two parietal bones
Coronal Suture
- Point of articulation of parietals with frontal bone
Temporal Bone
- Inferior to parietal bone on lateral skull
Squamos Suture
Point of articulation of the temporal bone with the parietal bone
Zygomatic Process
A bridgelike projection joining the zygomatic bone anteriorly
Mandibular Fossa
Rounded depression on the inferior surface of the zygomatic process
