What bones make up the bony orbit?
ehtmoid, sphenoid, frontal, maxilla, zygomatic, lacrimal, and palatine bones
What is the periorbita?
thickened periosteum of orbital bones that is continuous with periosteal dura and periosteum of external skull via optic canal, orbital fissures, orbital margins
What bones make up the orbital margin?
frontal, maxilla and zygomatic bones
What makes up the superior wall of the bony orbit?
mainly orbital plate of frontal bone
What makes up the medial wall of the bony orbit?
mainly thin orbital plate of ethmoid
What makes up the inferior wall of the bony orbit?
mainly very thin orbital plate of maxilla with sinus lying inferiorly
What makes up the lateral wall of the bony orbit?
mainly thick zygomatic bone
What are the tarsal plates?
- connective tissue in eyelid with levator palpebrae superioris inserting into superior plate
- palpebral part of orbicularis oculi lies superficial to plates
What are lacrimal papillae?
raised structure, with punctum, at medial end of margin of each lid
What is the conjunctiva?
- palpebral layer lines eyelids and reflects onto eye as bulbar conjunctiva
- fornices are recesses formed by reflection of conjunctiva onto eye
What are the medial and lateral canthus?
- angle formed by meeting of palpebrae
- medial has lacrimal lake, a reddish area with lacrimal caruncle
- plica semilunaris is fold of conjunctiva lateral to caruncle
What are lateral puncta?
openings of lacrimal canaliculi at apex of lacrimal papillae
What is the lacrimal sac?
- lies in lacrimal groove of maxilla/lacrimal bones and receives canaliculi
- empties into nasolacrimal duct
Where does the nasolarimal duct drain into?
nasal cavity
Where is the lacrimal gland?
lies in superolateral aspect of orbit
What nerve innervates the extrinsic eye muscles?
CN III (oculomotor) except, superior oblique (CN IV) and lateral rectus (CN VI)
What innervates levator palpebrae superioris?
CN III, oculomotor nerve
What is the action of lateral rectus?
aBduction
What is the action of medial rectus?
aDduction
What is the action of superior rectus?
elevation and aDduction
What is the action of inferior rectus?
depression and aDduction
What is the action of superior oblique?
depression and aBduction
What is the action of inferior oblique?
elevation and aBduction
Where does levator palpebrae superioris insert?
into superior tarsal plate
What innervates the superior tarsal muscle?
sympathetics
The ophthalmic artery is a branch of which artery?
internal carotid
How does the ophthalmic artery enter the orbit?
through the optic canal
The _____________ pierces dural sheath of the optic nerve to enter eye through optic disc
central artery
What is the sole arterial supply to the retina?
central artery
What do the ethmoidal arteries supply?
nasal cavity, frontal sinus and ethmoid air cells
What arteries supply the anterior scalp?
supratrochlear and supraorbital cross superior orbital margin to supply anterior scalp
What artery supplies the eyeball?
ciliary arteries
What vein communicates with the cavernous sinus?
superior ophthalmic vein
What vein communicates with pterygoid plexus and with cavernous sinus via superior ophthalmic?
inferior ophthalmic vein
What does the lacrimal nerve innervate?
conjunctiva, upper lid and carries parasympathetic postganglionic fibers to lacrimal gland
What does the frontal nerve innervate?
divides into supratrochlear and supraorbital and innervates anterior scalp
What are the branches of nasociliary nerve?
ethmoidlal nerves, short ciliary, and long ciliary
What do the ethmoidal nerves innervate?
nasal cavity and nasal sinuses
What type of fibers do short ciliary carry?
parasympathetics to ciliary and constrictor pupillae muscles
What type of fibers do long ciliary carry?
sympathetics to dilator pupillae muscle
