Herpes Zoster ophthalmicus (shingles)
A viral infection of the portion of the face supplied by the opthalmic n. (V-1). Spread of infection within the orbit to CN III, IV, and VI lead to partial paralysis of associated muscles.
Where is local anesthesia of the middle face often administered?
The infraorbital n. in the infraorbital foramen. The anesthesia must NOT be inserted in the infraorbital artery or vein.
What is Trigeminal neuralgia (tic douloureux)?
A condition characterized by sudden attacks of excruciating pain initiated by touching the skin folds innervated by the trigeminal nerve, often the maxillary nerve. The causes are unknown.
What is facial nerve palsy?
Bell's Palsy. Manifested by drooling, drooping of the face, inability to smile, inability to blink or close the eye. Onset is rapid and can be transient. May be caused due to inflammation of the facial n. at the stylomastoid foramen.
Patent Ductus Arteriousis
A condition where the normal channel between the pulmonary artery and the aorta fails to close at birth.
Symptoms:
Poor growth
rapid respiratory rate
Shortness of breath
Thrombophebitis
Inflammation due to clot formation in a vein. Thrombophebitis of the facial vein can occur in the danger area, a region where venous drainage communicates with the cavernous sinus. Clots may enter the sinus or cranial veins.
