President Lincoln showed political courage during the Civil War. The North was not being successful in the war and the casualties were very high causing the war to become unpopular. Lincoln was under great public and political pressure to negotiate peace. Even though he knew his decision would mean defeat in the 1864 election, he chose to continue the war to preserve the Union.
