What's an example of using new materials for otherwise classical architecture?

Capital Dome. The dome is not stone, but cast iron carefully painted to appear to be made of the same stone as the main capitol building. Columns, pilasters, and brackets. Ironwork was lifted by steam powered engines, which were fed wood from the old wooden done as fuel. Statue of freedom in top.

What's the first skyscraper?

Not the Jayne Building: it was 9 stories and the tallest commercial building but it couldn't support itself laterally and only stood thanks to being sandwiched in by neighboring buildings.
