Allen's Cognitive Level 6

Planned actions (conceptual abilities). Anticipates object relationships. Absence of dysfunction, task performance is planned and premeditated, self-concept: anticipates errors, and able to use abstract and symbolic reasoning. This individual considers several hypothetical plans of actions and establishes abstract criteria for selecting the best plan. This person is able to make plans for he future, taking into account possible risks to health and well-being for one's self and others.

Allen's Cognitive Level 5.8

Exploratory actions (learning new activity) Consulting with others. May live alone, care for others, and work in competitive employment (this individual may seek assistance with planning for possible consequences and complications, including asset management and health maintenance for future benefits )

May live alone with weekly inspections to monitor safety and check problem-solving methods, may arrive at a regularly scheduled community activity, and may succeed in a supportive employment environment. Levels 5.0 are interested in relationships, blames objects. They require concrete, obvious relationships to understand object interaction, in task performance they can do three familiar steps and one new one, in problem solving they use trial and error, they acquire new information with demonstration\feedback in learning.

Allen's Cognitive Level 4.8

Goal-directed activity (familiar activity) rote learning (memorization new steps). May live alone with daily assistance to monitor safety and check problem-solving methods, may arrive at a regularly scheduled community activity and may succeed in a supportive employment environment.

Allen's Cognitive Level 4.6

Goal-direction activity (familiar activity) personalizing (scanning the environment). They can live alone. May live alone with daily assistance to monitor personal safety, check problem-solving methods , and provide money for minor purchases (supervise and assist with household, financial and medical management)

Allen's Cognitive Level 4.0

Goal-directed activity (familiar activity) sequencing (self through steps of an activity). Independent in self-care. Requires 24-hour supervision to maintain safe surroundings, support consistent routines and assist with solving major and minor problems as they arise (the individual may prepare a cold meal, make incidental purchases, and complete basic self care tasks). Level 4.0 copies demonstration, and are known to ask "what's next? ". They must be shown relationships in object interaction, in task performance they can complete one-step instructions in task performance, they do not recognize errors in self concept, and their respond to corrective cueing by attempting but are unable.

Allen's Cognitive Level 3.8

Manual actions, using all objects and senses completion of an activity. Requires 24-hour supervision to keep the environment safe, to provide needs necessary to do activities of daily living, to check performance results, and to remove dangerous objects.

Allen's Cognitive Level 3.6

Manual actions, noting effects of actions on objects. Beginning to understand cause and effect. Requires 24-hour assistance to provide the materials needed for activities of daily living, to remind the individual to complete all the necessary steps, to check results, and to remove access to dangerous objects.

Allen's Cognitive Level 3.4

Manual actions, sustaining actions on objects. Requires 24-hour assistance to place the objects needed to do activities of daily living in front of the individual, and to sequence the necessary steps to achieve acceptable result, One caregiver can supervise three individuals, functioning at this level at one time.

Allen's Cognitive Level 3.2

Manual actions, distinguishing objects. Requires 24-hour assistance to place objects needed to do the activities of daily living in front of the individual, to sequencing the necessary steps, and to complete the motions for an acceptable level of self-care.

Allen's Cognitive Level 3.0

Manual actions, grasping objects. Interested in what is going on. Requires 24-hour assistance to elicit habitual motions for activities of daily living, and to complete the motions for an acceptable level of self-care. Their attention span is easily distracted by environmental stimuli, they react to texture and shape, touches and manipulates objects in object interaction, simple crafts can be introduced at this level.

Postural actions (gross body movements) using grab bars and railings for support. Requires 24-hour assistance to initiate and assist with all daily activities of daily living (the individual may use grab bars and furniture to stabilize their balance).

Postural actions (gross body movements) directed walking to self-identified locations. Requires 24-hour assistance to initiate and assist with daily activities of daily living (restrict walking to even surfaces in safe locations such as a room, building, or yard).
