What was Ainsworths strange situation? |
An controlled observation where 106 infants went through 7 different episodes all lasting 3 minutes in which the observers would use behavioural catagories such as stranger/separation distress. |
|
What did ainsworth create from the results? |
3 attachment types: Secure Insecure resistant Insecure avoident |
|
What are the advantages of this study? |
+ it's a valid study = it has led to more replicable studies which have identified a connection between the attachment types and their behaviour in later life = real life application = externally valid + good reliability = Bick et al = more than one researcher assessed attachment types using inter-observer reliability of 94% = objective = reliable |
|
What are the disadvantages of the research? |
- it doesn't explain cultural difference in attachment types = Japan have very strong mother Infant attachments = the same study over there would show all infants with Insecure resistant type = not representative. - disorganised attachment =mux of resistant and avoident types = reductionist - Kagan = temperament = measures crying not attachment behaviours = not valid |
