CHERI SAMBA, La Seduction, 1984

This painting represents moralizing. It depicts the popular story La Sirene (mother of water). In the story she is usually occupied by snakes, which represents common themes associated with them (i.e. evil, temptation, bad). If one follows her one will become rich easily but a high price will be paid. Cheri Samba places himself in the narrative by including a self portrait of himself above with an angel. This entire painting represents colonial power itself. La Sirene symbolizes an unstable and unpredictable aspect of urban life
