Secondary sex characteristics

Manifestations of sexual maturity at puberty, including development of breasts, growth of facial and body hair, and changes in the voice

Tanner stages (Male) stage one

Infantile stage begins. Genitalia increases slightly in overall size but there's little change in general appearance. No true pubic hair

Tanner stages (Male) stage 2

Scrotum has begun to enlarge- reddening and change in texture of scrotal skin. Sparse growth of lightly pigmented hair.

Tanner stages (Male) stage 3

Penis has increased in length. Further growth of the scrotum. Hair spreads over pubic symphyis.

Tanner stages (Male) stage 4

Length and breadth of penis have increased further and gland had developed. Scrotum further enlarged and scrotal skin is darker. Hair is now 'adult in character' but covers an area smaller than in most adults.

Tanner stages (Male) stage 5

Genitalia are adult in size and shape! Hair is distributed in an inverse triangle. Hair is also spread to medial surface of the thighs.

Secular trend

The tendency (over the past two centuries) for individuals to be larger in stature and to reach puberty earlier, primarily because of improvements in health and nutrition.

Class of chemicals secreted by animals that stimulate certain behaviors (in other members of the species) that stimulate pubertal maturation

Epiphysis

Closing of the ends of the bones, which terminates growth after the adolescent growth spurt has been completed
