REQUIREMENT

A tray containing :


1. An ampule/vialDiluent


2. Gallipot containing with sterile cotton wool swabs


3. Gallipot with a lid or container with antiseptic solution


4. Syringe


5. Needle


6. receiver for used swabs.


7. Methylated spirit.


Step one

1. Establishes rapport and explains procedure


Step two

2. Checks the physician's order for the type of medication and the ten rights of drug administration


Step 3

3. Checks medication label and be sure before reconstituting as per manufacturer instructions especially expiry date


Step 4

4. Wash hands, reconstitute and examine for cloudiness, sediments


Step 5

5. Draws medication and expels air from the barrel of the syringe

Step 6

6. Protects bed linen with a dressing mackintosh and towel and positions patient comfortably


Step 7

7. Washes hands, wears gloves and cleans entry port of cannula with methylated spirit and cotton wool swab


Step 8

8. Fixes syringe into the empty port of cannula and pushes medication slowly using the push-stop-push-stop technique till administration is completed whiles observing patient.


Step 9

9. Continue observing patient even after injecting medication 5 to 10 minutes later


Step 10

10. Encourages patient to inform the nurse for any adverse reaction


Step 11

11. Thanks patient and makes him comfortable in bed

12. Removes dressing mackintosh and towel and discards used items

13. Washes and dries hands and record procedure on treatment chart and on the nurses notes
