What are three pairs of large (major) salivary glands that secrete intermittently
-parotid glands
-submandibular (submaxillary) glands
-sublingual glands
Name the enzymes found in saliva and their function
amylase and maltase -- digest carbohydrates
Which salivary gland is purely serous in type?
Parotid gland
Which salivary gland is mostly mucous in type?
Sublingular gland
Describe the exocrine pancreas
- large organ in the abdomen with its head on the duodenum and its tail touching the spleen
- covered with a thin layer of c.t. - loose septa form lobules
What is the function of the endocrine pancreas?
produces hormones that control carbohydrate metabolism
Describe Acinar (Exocrine) Tissue
-compound serous acinar gland - each acinus varies from a rounded structure to a short tubule
-acini are composed of pyramidal cells with secretory capillaries between and a central lumen
-cells contain mitochondria and granular E.R. basally, secretion (zymogen) granules apically
-the base of each cell is therefore basophilic and the apex is acidophilic
Define the duct system of the exocrine pancreas
intercalated ducts commencing from central part of acinus, appear as centroacinar cells
What is the function of the duct system?
duct cells add bicarbonate and water to the exocrine secretion
