2 ways to change pH?
Respiration - blow off more CO2 to inc pH
Metabolic - renal change, by changing bicarbonate
Alkalosis vs. acidosis
Alkalosis = high pH (low H+)
Acidosis = low pH (high H+)
What does an inc in pH with a dec in PaCO2 indicate?
This indicates a respiratory problem b/c the respiratory system SHOULD be trying to conserve CO2 and prevent it from being exhaled in order to dec pH
What does an inc in pH with an INC in PaCO2 indicate?
A primary metabolic problem
Repsiratory system is trying to retain CO2 to dec pH to its normal level
What levels of bicarb and CO2 in relation to pH would tell you primary respiratory vs. metabolic problem?
Respiratory: Opposite (pH goes one way and CO2 or bicarb goes the other way)
Metabolic: Both changes are in the same direction
Normal levels for:
pH
PaCO2
HCO3-
7.35-7.45
32-48
22-26
What levels of PaO2 are normal, mild hypoxic, moderatley hypoxic, and severely hypoxic?
Normal: 80-100 mmHg
Mild: 60-80 mmHg
Moderate: 40-60 mmHg
Severe: <40 mmHg
