Evangeline and Gabriel were separated from each other when the British gathered up all the people of their Acadian village. they got put on different ships, and took them to seververal places father south. Evangeline searched for Gabriel for many years, following his trail, but never catching up with him. She finally gave up looking for him and started to help the needy in Philadelphia. Evangeline found Gabriel when she was helping care for the sick during an outbreak of disease, but by then he was dying. He recognized Evangeline, but was so ill he could only mouth her name before he died. He died in her arms.
