What population was studied in McKelvey's study (2007)?

indv who had chronic aphasia. Look if there was way to document pt using AAC. don’t make progress in traditional approach. What can we do for this population?

Why aren’t more indv with aphasia using AAC?

-Easily id as candidates for AAC

-Get treatment in hospital, as they progress, go to rehab, and then go home (no treatment at home)

-Don’t do AAC until they really need to

-Get recommended AAC when they are discharged

-Only those with strong advocates will bother with AAC (the wealthy)

What is a visual scene display?

-Will be single words and single messages

-But there will be phrases

-Have regular vocabulary, but need access to common vocabulary in same spot (to speed up comm process)

What was the objective of the study?

-Wanted to see pt with chronic aphasia participate with AAC with unfamiliar partners and multiple partners

-Measure 3 different dependables

-Try to get him to stop talking about his disabilities

-Navigational talk (ex. Let’s see… talk your thoughts outloud) - try to decrease it bc not natural

Who was the participant? Who were the partners

-Nonfluent aphasia, Broca’s, hemiparisis and apraxia

-Word retrieval issues

-20 different adults to talk to him

Why choose unfamiliar partners?

- results may be different if clients get used to the communication partners

-To see how they do with small talk

What did researchers find?

Disability talk decreased, generalization from theme 1 to 2

navigation/organization talk decreased while in baseline

Inappropriate question/answer exchanges dramatically decrease

Hanson in intelligibility

-Pacing (per word) does only works with ppl with outstanding metalinguistic skills because of cognitive load

-Tapping by the syllable is faster and easier

What is alphabet supplementation? Why use it?

-take alphabet board and ask person to point to first letter of board

-Have to have metalinguistic skills and be good at spelling, a little bit more demanding

-If have someone use alphabet supplementation, speech intelligibility raised by 25%

Why? - because more context clues what you’re saying

What is direct selection?

-don’t have to go through icons or symbols to get to what your target, get to your target immediately

-User access all choices on array at any time

What does the direct selection chooses?

-Systems may have keyboard with keys that depress, keyboards with keys that have very little/no movement, touch screens

-Keys may provide feedback (visual, tactile, auditory)

What is indirect selection?

have to go through symbols before getting to your target

May use fingers, hands, head/chin sticks, adaptive pointers, other body parts
