Grana (plural)/Granum (single)

A stack of thylakoids located in the chloroplasts.

Thylakoids

A series of flattened membranous sacs in a chloroplast that contain chlorophyll and the associated molecules needed for the LDR of photosynthesis.

Stroma

The matrix of chloroplasts where the LIR of photosynthesis takes place.

Oxidation

A chemical reaction involving the loss of electrons.

Reduction

A chemical reaction involving the gain of electrons.

Photolysis

The splitting of water molecules by light, such as occurs during the LDR of photosynthesis.

Electron carrier

A chain of carrier molecules along which electrons pass, releasing energy in the form of ATP as they do so.

Law of Limiting Factors

At any given moment, the rate of a physiological process is limited by the factor that is at its least favourable value.

Calvin cycle

A biochemical pathway that forms part of the LIR of photosynthesis, during which carbon dioxide is reduced to form carbohydrates.

Limiting factor

A variable that limits the rate of a chemical reaction.

Light-dependent reaction

The stage of photosynthesis in which light energy is required to produce ATP and reduced NADP.

Light-independent reaction

The stage of photosynthesis which does not require light energy directly., but it does need to products of the LDR to reduce carbon dioxide and so form carbohydrates.
