Ecosystem

An ecosystem is the result of the interactions between the abiotic and biotic factors in the environment.

Abiotic

Abiotic (Non-living) Factors: physical and chemical components that effect the environment. e.g. Availability of water (rainfall), temperature, amount of sunlight.

Biotic

Biotic (Living) Factors: All the living organisms. Their numbers, distribution and interactions.

Biome

A group of ecosystems around the world with similar abiotic factors. e.g deserts around the world.

Terrestrial (Land)

35% of the earth is covered by terrestrial environments. Main factors are the availability of water climate. Terrestrial Biomes: rainforest, deserts, grasslands and arctic tundra.

Aquatic (Marine/Freshwater)

65% of the earth is covered by aquatic environments. Main factors: availability of dissolved oxygen, amount of sunlight. Biomes: open seas, estuaries rivers and ponds.

Viscosity

How hard it is to move through gas/liquid.

Buoyancy

Amount of support provided by fluid or gas.

Temperature Variation

Temperature can range both daily and seasonal.

Pressure Variation

How much pressure there is from either the air or water.

Availability of Gases

Amount of oxygen (animals) and carbon dioxide (plants).

Availability of Water

Amount of water and when the water falls.

Availability of Ions

Amount of dissolved trace of nutrients are available.

Light Penetration

The intensity of light at a particular point.

Availability of Substrate

The composition and quality of the soil/sand/rock.

Strength of Natural Forces

Including tides, currents and wind.

Availability of Shelter

From sun and natural forces.

Availability of Space

Plants and animals need territory to live and nest.
