Direct Variation

A linear relationship between two variables, x and y, that can be written in the form y=kx, where k is a nonzero constant constant.

Constant of Variation

The constant k in direct and inverse variation equations.

Ordered Pair

A pair of numbers that can be used to locate a point on a coordinate plane.

Proportional Relationship

A relationship between two quantities in which of the ratio of one quantity to the other quantity is constant.

Rate of Change

A ratio that compares the amount of change in a dependent variable to the amount of change in an independent variable.

Slope

A measure of the steepness of a line on a graph; the rise divided by the run.

X-coordinate

The first number in an ordered pair; it tells the distance to move right or left from the origin (0,0).

Y-coordinate

The second number in an ordered pair; it tells the distance to move up or down from the origin (0,0).

Linear Equation

An equation that contains two or more variables.

Slope-Intercept Form

A linear equation written in the form y = mx + b, where m represents slope and b represents the y-intercept.

Solution of a System of Equations

A set of values that make all equations in a system true.

System of Equations

A set of two or more equations that contain two or more variables.

Y-intercept

The y-coordinate of the point where the graph of a line crosses the y-axis.
