What is a bird?
1) endothermic vertebrate
2) has feathers
3) has 4 chambered heart
4) lays eggs
What are feathers made of?
from the same material as repile scales and your fingernails
What is one of the largest feathers that give shape to a birds body?
Contour
What are contour feathers used for?
Used to balanced and steer in flight
What are down feathers used for?
trap heat and keep bird warm
What is an insulator?
a material that doesn't conduct heat well and prevents it from escaping
What is a bird's crop?
an internal storage tank that allows birds to store more food inside their body after swallowing it.
What does a bird's gizzard do?
a thick walled, muscular part of the stomach that SQUEEZES AND GRINDS PARTIALLY DIGESTED FOOD.
How does oxygen relate to flying?
they must have a lot of oxygen to release the energy needed for flying
What helps birds have more oxygen?
Air sacs to increase the amount of air that the lungs have available
What kind of reflexes and reactions do birds possess?
Very quick
How are bird eggs fertilized?
Internal fertilization.
Describe the shell of bird eggs?
hard shell
What temperature must eggs have in order to hatch and how do they keep the temperature the same.
They have to have body temperature of the parent bird and the parent sits or INCUBATES the eggs.
What allows birds to live in a variety of environments?
Different wings, legs, bills, claws, etc
How are birds important?
1) some help pollinate or seed dispersal
2) Some are food sources
3) help keep pest population (like rodents) in check
How does air move across wings?
Air moves across the dome shaped TOP of wing surface while air moves BELOW the flat wing surface?
How fast does the air move on top of wings and on bottom?
On top it moves faster because the wing on top is long and it must move at the same time as the bottom
Describe the air pressure on the wings at top.
Air pressure on top is reduced because molecules are more spread out while moving fast
How do they get the lift?
from the difference in pressure above and below. It produces an upward life that causes the wing to rise
Do all birds flap their wings and why?
Some flap but some soar to glide to save energy
Wht is a mammal?
1) endothermic vertebrate
2) 4 chambered heart
3) skin covered with fur/hair
4) born alive
5) feed with milk from mother
Do we know that dolphins have fur/hair?
We found out that they chin hairs.
What does fur do?
Insulates and protects mammals
What kind of teeth do mammals have?
1) Incisors- blade like, flat and used for cutting
2) Canines-sharp to stab and tear
3) Premolars & molars- grind, crush, shred food
How do the get oxygen?
through the diaphram and lungs
What is the diaphram?
large flat muscle located at the bottom of the rib cage. it lowers pressure in chest cavity-so lungs fill with air.
What kind of brain do mammals have ?
COMPLEX- THE ABILITY TO ADAPT AND LEARN
WHAT ARE THE SIGHT, HEARING AND SMELL GOOD FOR IN MAMMALS?
FOR protection and predation
Most mammals move how?
Walk on all fours or run but some hop, glide or swim
What kind of mammal fertilization?
internal
What are glands for producing milk for thier young called?
MAMMARY GLANDS
What is a MONOTREMES?
MAMMALS THAT LAY EGGS
Name 2 monotremes?
Spiny Anteater
Duck-billed platypuses
Describe how the young anteater monotremes get milk?
Milk seepsd out the mother's pores
How does the young duck-billed platypus get milk?
mOTHER'S MILK OOZES ONTO THE FUR OF THE MOTHERS BELLY
How are young marsupials born and cared for?
Born alive but continue to develop in the pouch
what does GESTATION PERIOD mean?
the length of time between fertilization and birth
Who are the largest MARSUPIALS?
KANGAROOS
Which marsupial has very large litters?
Opossums up to 21 at a time
What is a placental animal?
develops inside the mother's body until it is ready to function alone
What is a placenta?
the organ in a pregnant female that passes material between mother and the developing female
Describe a flying mammal
has skin between limbs tha is stretched to allow them to fly or glide!
How do Rabbits and Hares adapt?
long hind legs
What is the largest group of mammals?
rodents
What is the brain like in primates?
large with opposable thumbs
How are hoofed mammals divided?
those having even number of hoof and those with odd
What are carnivores?
eat meat
Name marine mammals?
whales, manatees, dolphins
