How has Ptolemy Copernicus contributed to the science of astronomy?
He was the first to propose a sun-centered model of the solar system.
How has Tycho Brahe contributed to astronomoy?
Brahe recorded very precise observaions of the planets and stars that helped future astronomers.
How has Kepler contributed to astronomy?
He was the one that discovered that planet's orbits are elliptical.
How has Galileo contributed to astronomy?
He supported the Sun centered model because he observed Venus going through phases, like the moon.
How did Isaac Newton contribute to astronomy?
He showed that all objects in the universe attract eachother through gravitational force.
How did Edwin Hubble contribut to astronomy?
He proved that other galaxies existed beyond the edge of the Milky Way.
What is the difference between reflecting and refracting telescopes?
Reflecting telescopes uses a curved mirror to gather light rather than lenses that refracting telescopes use.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of reflecting telescopes?
Reflecting: One advantage is that the mirrors can be very large and large mirrors allow reflecting telescopes to gather more light than refracting telescopes. Another advantage is that curved mirrors are polished on their curved side, which prevents light from entering the glass so flwas in the glass don't affect the light. A 3rd advantage is that mirrors can focus on all colors of the light on the same focal point. Unfortunately, they are more expensive.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of refracting telescopes?
The advantage is that it's cheaper. The disadvantages are that the images cannot be perfectly focused and another s that the size of a refracting telescope is limited by the size of objective lens.
Why do we believe the universe is expanding?
The light from all galaxies except our close neighbors are effected by redshift.
What are nonoptical telescopes and what do we use them for?
They are telescopes that help out more with magnification. We use them to see farther into space.
What is a light-year?
It's the distance light travels in a year.
How do scientists measure the distance to stars?
Parallax.
How can you tell the age of a star?
By studying their magnitude, temperature, or size.
What does a star's color tell us about the star.
It's temperature.
