Oil which is blessed by a bishop for use in the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Orders.
rite
1. It is a particular way of celebrating the sacraments according to the rules of the Church. For example, there is a detailed one for baptizing people. 2. It can also mean a whole group of Christians who share a common way of worship and of living the faith. There are five different these of Catholics in the Church. All of us profess the same faith. The two largest are the Roman Catholics and the Byzantine Catholics.
sacred chrism
A special oil blessed by a bishop and used in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders. It has a very beautiful scent which symbolizes the attraction of goodness and holiness. Anointing with it shows that we have been called by God to serve Him as prophets, priests, and kings in Christ.
sign of Baptism
The priest (or in an emergency any person) pours water over the forehead of the person being baptized while saying: "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." The message is that of cleansing from sin and dedication to the Trinity.
vow
A free promise which we make to God, telling Him that we will do something that is good and pleasing in His sight. Every Christian has made a Baptismal one or Baptismal Promise to God - a private one. This one says that we will do good, avoid evil, and live according to the teachings of Christ and His Church.
