Why is the motto "E Pluribus Unum" a good saying?
Latin for "Out of many, one." Leaders thought this was a good motto fro the US because a variety of people from 13 different states were coming together to form one country. It still makes sense today because Americans live in many different types of places - mountains, farms, beaches, big cities - and are a rich mix of cultures.
What is one reason the USA is so varied?
A. ...because the land differs from place to place. We live everywhere from the mountains of Alaska to the beaches of Florida, from small farms in Iowa to to huge cities like Los Angeles, NY, and Houston.
B. ...because the American people have many different ways of making a living. Americans of all ages spend their days at thousands of different jobs or schools.
C. ...because it has many different kinds of people who have different backgrounds and customs (cultures).
What is the name that defines people who come to live in the US from all over the world?
immigrant
Why is the Pledge of Allegiance important?
We have family roots in all parts of the world but we are able to form one strong country because we share some basic ideals such as the belief in "liberty and justice for all."
What best describes a democracy?
In a democracy the people have the power to make decisions about the government. In a direct democracy all the voters in a community get together to make decisions about what their gov't should do. This type of democracy works well is small communities but not very large ones.
What is meant by the saying the US has a varied population?
The US is home to a wide variety of ethnic groups
Why is the gov't of the US a republic and not a direct democracy?
Because if every voter in the US had to get together every time we wanted the gov't to do something it would be very hard - we have millions of voters. So we elect representatives to make the laws and run the gov't for us.
What are the rights and responsibilities of a citizen of the US?
Rights - freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to fair trial, right to vote, right to change or improve a law they think is wrong
Responsibilities - get involved. Gov't of the people can work only if citizens participate in the process of choosing leaders and making laws. Also obeying the laws, respecting the rights of others, and going to school are key responsilities.
immigrants
people who leave one country to go and live in another country
