story of caedmon
caedmon was an alliterate hersman employed by the monastary. A man appeard to him in a dream demanding for him to "sing him a song." upon caedmon stating that he didnt know how to sing, the man told him to sing about creation. Bede recorded this song

Now [we] must honour the guardian of heaven,
